How to wash and care for DTF-printed shirts
A practical guide to washing, drying, ironing and handling custom apparel without treating every garment or transfer system as identical.

That is why a single care rule copied from another shirt may not be appropriate for every custom-apparel order.

Before the first wash
Some transfer manufacturers specify a wait after application before the first wash, but the timing can vary by system. Follow any first-wash direction supplied with the completed order. A cautious DTF shirt washing routine
- Check the label and print instructions. Confirm the permitted water, bleach, dryer and ironing treatments.
- Turn the garment inside out. This reduces direct rubbing between the printed surface and other items in the load.
- Close abrasive hardware. Zip zippers and avoid washing the print against rough fasteners or objects.
- Choose a gentle compatible wash. Cool water, a mild detergent and a less aggressive cycle are cautious starting points when the garment label allows them.
- Remove the garment promptly. Avoid leaving the print compressed in a wet load longer than necessary.

Can a DTF-printed shirt go in the dryer?
Do not answer this from the print alone. First check whether the garment label permits tumble drying, then compare that with the print-care direction. Low dryer heat or air drying is a cautious starting point when compatible with both. High heat should not be assumed safe simply because the blank garment can tolerate a dryer.
When air drying, reshape the garment gently and avoid stretching the printed area while it is wet. If using a dryer, remove the item when dry rather than repeatedly exposing it to unnecessary heat.
Can you iron a DTF print?
Avoid placing a hot iron directly on the printed surface. If the garment label permits ironing, work from the reverse side and keep direct heat away from the artwork. Do not use a household iron to โrepairโ a lifting edge unless the production method and correct reapplication procedure have been confirmed.
Stains and stronger cleaners
Treat stains according to the garment label and test any unfamiliar cleaner in an inconspicuous area. Avoid aggressive scrubbing on the print. Products described as colour-safe or fabric-safe are not automatically compatible with every garment dye or transfer material.
