Short answer: The best T-shirt colour for a logo is one that gives the important parts of the mark clear lightโ€“dark contrast and still fits the brand. Compare only approved logo versions against the exact garment colour, inspect the fabric texture, test the design at its intended size and treat the screen preview as a guideโ€”not an exact physical colour match.

Decide what should lead visually

โ€œMost visibleโ€ and โ€œbest-lookingโ€ are not always the same goal. A customer-facing team may prioritize fast recognition. Merchandise may call for a quieter, more wearable palette. An event shirt may need to read clearly in photographs or from across a room.

Contrast is more than opposite colours

  1. Place the approved logo over each candidate garment colour.
  2. Convert a duplicate preview to grayscale.
  3. Reduce the preview to a small thumbnail.
  4. View it from the distance that matters for the project.
  5. Check whether the main mark and necessary text remain distinguishable.

Why fabric texture changes how logo colour looks

A garment is not a flat colour swatch. Its fibres create tiny highlights and shadows, while heathering, washing and visible knit patterns can make the base colour look lighter, darker or less uniform as the light changes. The same approved logo can therefore feel sharper on one surface and softer on another.

Read the surface, not just the colour name

In this close-up, the beige textile has a pronounced weave. That surface creates its own visual pattern beneath the blue, pink, yellow and purple artwork.

  • Solid fabric may look more uniform from a distance.
  • Heathered or woven texture introduces light and dark variation inside the garment colour.
  • Fine logo details should be checked at the actual intended size, not only while zoomed in.
  • Real lighting can change the apparent contrast as the garment moves.

Texture alone does not determine whether a garment is appropriate for DTF. Use the exact product, colour and approved artwork together, then confirm any production-dependent questions before ordering.

Record the exact product colour

Names such as โ€œnavy,โ€ โ€œroyalโ€ or โ€œsandโ€ are not universal specifications. Record the product or supplier code, complete colour name, garment style, approved artwork version and date of the decision. That record is more useful for a future reorder than a screenshot alone.

Gildan notes that colours displayed online may differ from actual garments because monitors vary. SanMar Canada product documentation also warns that textile colours can vary by dye lot and are not exact matches to printed Pantone references. These are general manufacturer cautions, not a statement of Printz Experts' colour tolerances.

Can full-colour DTF artwork go on a dark garment?

DTF systems can use CMYK colour plus white ink. The white layer can support colour artwork on a darker garment, so dark shirts are not automatically excluded. Why a screen cannot guarantee a fabric colour

Displays produce colour with RGB light, while printed results use ink and are viewed on a physical surface. Screen brightness and calibration vary. Fabric texture and dye influence perception. Adobe notes that some displayed colours cannot be reproduced exactly in print and some printed colours cannot be represented accurately on a monitor.

A mockup is therefore useful for layout and broad comparison, but it should not be described as an exact physical colour match.
