How to Choose a Shirt for DTF Printing

Match the shirt to the people wearing it, the artwork and the setting where it will be used.

DTF apparel example

The best shirt for DTF printing is the one that suits its wearer, supports the artwork and has been confirmed for the decoration process. Start with the garmentโ€™s intended use, then compare the fabric, fit, colour and print area. Do not choose by fibre content alone: the exact style and finish matter too.

Before selecting a product, send the print provider the style name or product number, the artwork, the print location and the size range you need. That makes it easier to check whether the garment and design work together.

Start with how the shirt will be used

A shirt for a one-day event may have different priorities from a staff uniform or a retail item. Consider how often it will be worn, the setting, the season and whether people need a standard or more relaxed fit. Ask who will wear it and what matters most: comfort, durability, a consistent group look, a broad size range or a particular style.

If you need help comparing fit profiles, use the separate custom T-shirt fit guide. Then bring that preference into the DTF conversation so the print placement and garment style can be assessed together.

Check the fabric and surface

Read the garment information and share the fibre content with the printer. Cotton, polyester and blends are common starting points, but surface texture, stretch, coatings and heat sensitivity can affect suitability. Fleece and textured fabrics may also change how a design sits on the finished garment.

For an unusual product, a specialty finish or a high-visibility order, request confirmation on the exact garment before choosing it for the full run. The DTF fabric guide lists the main details to check.

Match shirt colour to the design

Think about contrast at the same time as garment colour. Fine lines, small text and dark artwork can become hard to see on some shirt colours. A design may need a light-colour version for a dark shirt or a simplified version for a textured garment. If several garment colours are planned, check that the artwork remains readable across the whole set.

When choosing a dark shirt, review the guide to DTF printing on dark shirts and confirm how the artwork will be prepared for the selected colour.

Plan the print area

Pick the placement before approving the garment. Measure or describe the intended location: left chest, full front, back, sleeve or another area. Check for seams, pockets, zippers, necklines and curved panels that limit the flat space. The usable area can differ by size, so check the smallest garment in the size range too.

Check the full order, not one sample size

  • Confirm that the garment comes in every size you need.
  • Check whether the same style is available in the colour mix you want.
  • Share a size breakdown and any different artwork versions.
  • Compare a total quote using the same garment and print specifications.
  • Ask whether a proof or sample review is available before production.

These details reduce avoidable changes after the artwork, garment and quantities have been agreed. Keep a copy of the final product name and size list with your order notes.

Common questions

What is the best shirt material for DTF?

There is no single best material for every project. Cotton, polyester and blends are commonly considered, but the exact garment and its finish must be checked for the process.

Can I use the same artwork on every shirt colour?

Sometimes, but contrast and readability can change from one colour to another. Review the artwork on each intended garment colour before approving the order.

What should I send when asking for a shirt recommendation?

Include the garmentโ€™s use, preferred fit, size range, colour choices, artwork, print placement and approximate quantity.
